What we collect
The publication may collect email addresses, subscription status, payment-related account identifiers, delivery events, and engagement information such as opens or link clicks. Correction emails and support requests may contain whatever information the sender chooses to provide.
Website measurement
Cloudflare hosts this website and provides aggregate traffic analytics. We also count page views, subscription-offer views, sample-edition views, and subscription-link clicks. These counts are grouped by day, public page, general referral source, device category, and offer placement. Our interaction counter does not store names, email addresses, IP addresses, full referring URLs, search text, or persistent visitor identifiers. Counts describe interactions, not identifiable people. Hosting providers process network information to deliver and protect the site under their own policies.
Referral categories include AI services such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. An incoming campaign label may suggest a service when no referrer is available; this is counted separately and is not verified attribution. We do not collect prompts. For page views, Cloudflare's approximate network location is reduced to Georgia, other United States, United States with unknown state, outside the United States, or unknown. Only separate daily regional totals are retained, without linking location to a case page, referral source, device, or individual. We do not request your device's location or retain city, postal code, coordinates, or IP address in this counter.
Subscription links include general campaign labels so Buttondown can attribute signups. We do not send your case-page browsing history or an individual tracking identifier to Buttondown. Our interaction counter honors Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track. You can also exclude this browser from the interaction counter or allow it again. This preference is saved only in your browser and does not change Cloudflare's separate traffic analytics. Aggregate interaction counts are retained for up to 13 months.
Service providers
To measure subscription activity, Buttondown may send checkout and paid-offering enrollment notifications to our Cloudflare-hosted service. These notifications may contain subscriber or payment-account identifiers. The measurement service discards the incoming details and retains only the event type, receipt time, and a protected event reference to avoid counting repeated deliveries. These records are kept for up to 13 months, separately from website interactions, and are not linked to your case-page browsing. Website measurement choices do not change the processing needed to operate your subscription.
Newsletter delivery and subscriber management are handled by Buttondown. Payments are processed by Stripe. Those providers process information under their own privacy policies. The publication does not receive full payment-card numbers.
